The Essential Sri Anandamayi Ma: Life and Teaching of a 20th Century Indian Saint
Format: Paqperback, Kindle
Price: $7.99, $15.29
Sri Anandamayi Ma (1896-1982) was one of the great Hindu saints of the 20th Century. She was born in present-day Bangladesh and as a person of remarkable piety, sanctity, and wisdom, she came to the notice of both simple people and famous figures of India. She did not have an outer guru, and emphasized the importance of detachment from the world and religious devotion, encouraging her devotees to serve others.
An ecstatic child of ecstatic parents, she became a famous saint who like many other female Indian saints stood on the edge of several religious traditions, and in the midst of none. She influenced the spirituality of thousands of people who came to see her throughout her long life, and passed away in 1982.
The central theme of all her words and expressions is this: Life and religion are one. All that you do to maintain your life, your everyday work and play, all your attempts to earn a living, should be done with sincerity, love and devotion, with a firm conviction that true living means virtually perfecting one’s spiritual existence in tune with the universe. To bring about this synthesis, religious culture should be made as natural and easy as taking our food and drink when we are hungry and thirsty.
Ma died in 1982 at the age of 86 years. When Ma was dying her diciples around her were all so worried. She noted their reaction and said gently, “Do you start to wail and cry if a person goes to another room in the house? This death is inevitably connected with this life. In the sphere of Immortality, where is the question of death and loss? Nobody is lost to me”. She really loved her diciples.
Anandamayi Ma has inspired millions of individuals of diverse faiths and circumstances – from Prime Ministers, artists, and industrialists to shopkeepers, beggars and monks including Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Jawarharlal Nehru, Former Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Queen Mother of Greece, and the Former President of India, Ragendra Prasad.
You can read about Her life and Teachings in this book: The Essential Sri Anandamayi Ma: Life and Teaching of a 20th Century Indian Saint.
The Collected Works of Ramana Maharshi
Author: Arthur Osborne
Format: Paperback, Hardcover
Price: $13.86, $21.95
Ramana Maharhshi was a guru of international renown from southern India who taught during the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in 1879 near Madurai, Tamilnadu. His father was a farmer. He was the second of three sons. The family was religious, giving ritual offerings to the family deity and visiting temples.
Ramana was largely disinterested in school and absent-minded during work. As a youth He had a marked inclination towards introspection and self-analysis.
At the age of sixteen, Ramana had a Divine experience while meditating and He became Enlightened. He tasted the Bliss of the Supreme and was forever a Divine Being at the age of sixteen.
His uncle had mentioned a place called Arunachala with a famous mountain dedicated to Lord Shiva. When He heard that a place called Arunachala actually existed He left home and went to live at the Arunachala mountain.
He stayed there with many followers and a rich life until His death in 1951.
This book The Collected Works of Ramana Maharshi contains almost everything written by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, his inspired compositions, and a number of translations from ancient Advaitic texts, representing the essence of his teachings.
The deepest and most important books in here are the book Who Am I? and The Essence of Spiritual Instruction, although all of the chapters are really good.
These works fall into two categories – those which exemplify the path of surrender through love and devotion to the Divine, and those which are more doctrinal. The first group included the Five Hymns to Sri Arunachala, of which the first poem, The Marital Garland of Letters, “is among the most profound and moving poems in any language” and expressses the attitude of the soul aspiring for union with God.
Sri Bhagavan has affirmed that seekers who study these works are certain to attain the Bliss of Liberation.
This may be considered the best meditation book you can buy because it is so full of good chapters containing everything you would ever want to know about spirituality from the Greatest Meditation Master Ramana.
An Introduction to Buddhism (Core Teachings of Dalai Lama)
Author: The Dalai Lama
Format: Paqperback, Kindle
Price: $12.99, $16.95
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He is the spiritual leader of Tibet. He was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet.
He is one of the Dalai Lamas who are believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are realized beings, inspired by the wish to attain complete enlightenment, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help all living beings.
The “Core Teachings of the Dalai Lama” series begins with this small book of teachings by His Holiness, the perfect introduction to traditional Tibetan Buddhist thought and practice.
There is no one more suited to introduce beginners—and remind seasoned practitioners— of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism than His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Speaking to an audience of Western students, the Dalai Lama shows us how to apply basic Buddhist principles to our day-to-day lives. Starting with the very foundation of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths, he provides the framework for understanding the Buddha’s first teachings on suffering, happiness, and peace. He follows with commentary on two of Buddhism’s most profound texts: The Eight Verses on Training the Mind and Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, often referring to the former as one of his main sources of inspiration for the practice of compassion. With clear, accessible language and the familiar sense of humor that infuses nearly all of his work, the Dalai Lama invites us all to develop innermost awareness, a proper understanding of the nature of reality, and heartfelt compassion for all beings.
This book was previously published under the title Lighting the Way.
